Get something she would have chosen for herself, at a quality she will recognise. The mother-in-law gift fails when it guesses at her taste, so the safe ground is objects with a provenance she can read on the box: a Paris tea house from 1854, a French pharmacy formula from 1878, bone china, real linen. The ones that are hard to get wrong
Paris in Love, 30 Sachets, $54. Mariage Frères black tea perfumed with rose, in cotton muslin sachets. The box is the gift as much as the tea, and the name does some of the work for you.
Rose & Honey Hydrating Jelly, $28. Féret Parfumeur has made this the same way since 1878: honey, glycerin and rose water in a glass jar. It goes on hands and looks right on a dressing table.
Marie Cup and Saucer, $54. Fine bone china from Twig New York in the Always pattern, the kind of cup she will bring out for company. Buy one, not a set, and let it be hers.
For the house
Adolescence, Neroli Candle, $64. Orange blossom, green and slightly bitter, hand-poured for Sibonei in Grasse. Neroli is the scent that suits the most people, which matters when you cannot ask.
Julep Hammered Brass Vase, Large, $128. Hammered brass from Encasa in Spain, the shape that turns a hall table into a composition. Holds a tall bouquet, and holds its own empty.
Blossom Sand Linen Napkin, Set of 4, $168. Pure linen from Isla Capricho in Colombia, 20 inches square, with a blossom-embroidered border and a mitered hem. This is the top of the list and the one for a mother-in-law who sets a real table.
For the table she keeps

What to skip
Perfume unless you know her bottle, kitchen tools that suggest she needs them, and anything that says Mom on it. The gift should feel chosen, not assigned.
