Give the first good version of something they are currently doing badly. French Acacia Cutting Board, Standard, $68. Solid acacia from Novastyl in France, wide enough for a whole roast chicken with room for the knife. This is the board that stays out on the counter, so it should look like one.
Nicolas Alziari Cuvée Prestige Olive Oil, $44. A Provençal blend from a recipe kept for over a hundred years, in the printed tin. Poured raw over vegetables. The tin stays on the shelf after the oil is gone.
The table
Chalk White Stoneware Dinner Plate, $34. French stoneware from Novastyl in a warm chalky white, 10.2 inches, the plate that makes a Tuesday dinner look composed. Buy two, or four, and let them build from there.

The evening after the boxes
Bazaar Double Playing Cards, $58. Two decks in a marbled case from Printworks. For the first night the television is not set up yet.
The Newlywed Cookbook, $38. Recipes for a couple cooking together in a kitchen they are still figuring out, one pan where possible. It says newlywed on the cover and works for anyone who has just merged two sets of saucepans.
Matriarch Elephant Bookends, Set of 2, $138. Two amber elephants with trunks raised that anchor a shelf with real weight. The top of this list, for the couple whose books are still in boxes. One set left.

What to skip
Anything monogrammed, anything that assumes their colour scheme, and a doormat. Give them the good version of a thing they use every day and let them decorate for themselves.
