Mariage Frères layers velvety bergamot over black tea and finishes it with cornflower petals, which add something the original never had. Thirty cotton muslin sachets, hand-blended in Paris by a house at it since 1854.

For the Earl Grey loyalist who doesn't yet know an upgrade exists, or the host whose tea shelf deserves better company.

Mariage Frères

Paris, France · Since 1854

The Mariage family had been trading tea since 1660, when an ancestor sailed for Persia and the East Indies on behalf of the French crown. Two brothers, Henri and Édouard, finally put the name over a door in Paris in 1854.

For the next hundred and thirty years they sold only to the trade. The first tea salon, in the Marais, opened in 1983. They blend more than a thousand teas in Paris and hold the Jardin Premier mark back for single-garden lots.

The black teas are the place to start.
