How do you set an autumn table without it looking like Thanksgiving?

Set it with weight, not with props. An autumn table reads as autumn because of glaze, brass and candlelight, not because there is a gourd on it. Heavier plates, a low bowl instead of a flat one, two tapers lit before anyone knocks, and one wooden board that stays out all evening. That is the whole method. Everything below is on the shelves at 555 Hudson Street and in The Autumn Table, priced as listed.

Start with the plate, because everything sits on it

Washed Burgundy Stoneware Dinner Plate, $38. A dense floral transfer print in burgundy on cream, with a scalloped edge. It does the seasonal work on its own, so nothing else on the table has to try. Buy the number of people you actually seat, not twelve.

Artichoke Green Stoneware Low Bowl, $34. The same pattern in green. Low bowls are more useful than flat plates from September onward, because most of what you cook in autumn has liquid in it, and green against the burgundy is the only colour decision you need to make.

Light it before they arrive

Taper Candle Pair, Tall, $28. Ester & Erik, and the reason we reorder them constantly. They burn slowly, they do not drip down the stick, and two of them light a table for four properly.

Antique Brass Candlestick, from $38. Brass reads warmer than silver under candlelight, which matters more in October than it does in June. Buy two at different heights rather than a matched pair.

Santal Candle, $48. Sandalwood and cedarwood. Light it in the room forty minutes before people arrive, then move it away from the table so it does not argue with dinner.

Glassware you will actually use

Bee Tumbler, Clear, $18. La Rochere, pressed in France, and cheap enough that breaking one is not an event. This is the glass to buy in quantity.

Rialto Coupe Glasses, Set of 2, $94. The opposite argument. Two good coupes, kept for the first drink of the evening, are worth more than eight ordinary ones.

The board and the cheese, which is most of an autumn evening

French Acacia Cutting Board, Long, $58. Long and narrow, so it runs down the middle of a table instead of taking a corner of it. It is a serving board that also works as a chopping board, which is why it never goes back in the cupboard.

Jean Dubost Cheese Spreaders, Set of 4, $68. Made in Thiers, ivory handles with brass. Four of them means nobody uses the same knife on the blue and the brie, which is the entire point.

Nori Bar Nuts, $28. From Eleven Madison Home. Put the jar out before dinner and let people eat standing up while you finish. Also the correct thing to bring if you are the guest rather than the host.

What to skip

Gourds, wheat sheaves in a jug, anything the colour of a traffic cone, and a full formal setting for a Tuesday. Autumn on a table is a temperature, not a theme. If the plates are heavy and the candles are lit, the season is already there.

All of it is in The Autumn Table, or come and put your hands on it at 555 Hudson Street, open daily eleven to seven. If you are buying for someone else, For the Host is the shorter list, and every order leaves the West Village wrapped by hand.
