A soft red thinning to bone at the edges, deepest where the crystals grew thickest. Hibiscus is the warmest of the large vases and the one that moves most under lamplight.

Grown, not cut. Isaac Monte dissolves five to seven minerals in boiling water in a large metal tank, suspends a glass form in the solution and lets the tank cool. Over the following weeks the minerals come out of the water and grow onto the glass. Nothing is glued and nothing is carved. The crystal is the object.

The color comes from which minerals went into the tank. Trace amounts change the whole piece, and the gradient is a record of how fast the water gave them up. Where the surface is coarse and faceted, the crystals grew slowly. Where it runs fine and dense, they grew fast.

Twelve to fourteen inches tall, depending on how this one settled. A glass interior holds the water and the flowers, and on the large vases it lifts out for filling and cleaning. The crystal itself never touches water.

He sets the chemistry, the temperature and the timing. The tank decides the rest, which is why no two are alike and why he will tell you he cannot fully steer any single one. Customs classifies these under the same heading as original sculpture, HS 9703.90. This is the only Hibiscus large vase.

It goes on the entry console, or the dining table when the family comes. Flowers or no flowers, it holds the room. For the wedding that means it, the fiftieth, the collector who has been waiting for the piece rather than the step toward it.
