Crystal Candlestick, Citrine
A bright lemon yellow, the color of the gemstone it is named for and of a room at nine in the morning.
Grown, not cut. Isaac Monte dissolves five to seven minerals in boiling water in a large metal tank, suspends a form in the solution and lets the tank cool. Over the following weeks the minerals come out of the water and grow onto it. Nothing is glued and nothing is carved. The crystal is the object.
The color comes from which minerals went into the tank. Yellow was among the harder colors to control, and took him an extra year of testing after the technique itself was working.
Sized for a standard taper, about one inch in diameter. Light behaves differently in crystal than in glass. Less reflection, more refraction, and the yellow lifts the whole body before the wick is even lit.
He sets the chemistry, the temperature and the timing. The tank decides the rest. This is the only Citrine candlestick.
For the friend whose taste runs singular, the collector, the registry that wants art instead of a place setting. It is also the easiest way into this work, at the price of a good bottle rather than a piece of furniture.
